Full Match Report - Marsden v Brighouse

Brighouse Town 0 – 3 Marsden AFC

Marsden kept up their great start to 2009 and their 100% league record this year with a good performance and win against a Brighouse side who had no answer to the physical and technical strength of the visitors.

After the home side had kindly agreed to delay kick off for 15 minutes due to the Marsden kit only arriving at 2:15pm the game eventually got going at 2:45pm and it was the home side who started the brightest with the busy left winger making some good runs but failing to really create anything significant. After the opening  5 minutes on the back foot Marsden began to find their feet (albeit rather difficultly on the slippy surface) and play some good football. The visitors would have taken the lead moments earlier than they actually did if it wasn't for the Brighouse keeper who pulled off a great leap to deny Shane Kelly's looping header by smartly tipping over the bar! From the resulting corner Kelly was brought crashing down by a rash challenge in the box after a neat turn away from goal, however a good advantage played by the impressive referee, Mr Gareth Nutter, allowed Dave Conway to fire home into the bottom corner from the edge of the box.
Marsden almost double their lead 5 minutes later with what would surely have been 'Goal Of The Decade' from a most unlikely source! Matthew Butters unleashed a vicious left foot half volley from all of 40 yards which beat the outstretched arm of the keeper only to see it come crashing back off the underside of the bar, hit the keeper on the back of the head and squirm agonisingly past the post! Unbelievable!
Brighouse only registered 1 shot in the 1st Half and again it was the little left winger who caused 'The Cuckoo's' problems but his well struck left foot shot flashed past the far post of Ashley Connor after Adam Rider had done just enough to put him off.

In the 2nd Half Marsden dominated from the first whistle until the last and really put the home side to the sword! Gavin Connor made an inspired substitution replacing Butters who clearly hadn't recovered from kicking a ball the hardest he had ever kicked one before (oh and he had a problematic groin) with the loyalist man in football, Ryan Taylor and the move paid dividends with 'The Cuckoo's' scoring 2 goals in 5 minutes of him being on the pitch (although he didn't touch the ball once in that time ;-))!
After the 2 giant muppets at centre half had failed to deal with a long kick from Connor  properly the ball dropped perfectly to Pual Storer who continued his good form and scored his second goal in as many league games with a well taken left foot volley from the edge of the box that left the keeper with no chance.
Marsden then sealed all 3 points with another goal and another assist from Connor, The flame haired keeper once again put tweedle dumb and tweedle dumber under pressure with another giant clearance to release Dave Brennan who coolly rounded the keeper to slot home!

Marsden should have had another goal when Richard Conway pounced on another defensive mix up from the same culprits and rounded the keeper to his right only to realise that his right foot is for standing on only and had to check back to his left, he cut the ball back to sub Lee Wood who blazed over from all of 7 yards!

A confident performance from Marsden who look a completely different side in 2009 and long may this good form continue!
