Full Match Report: Marsden V Ovenden

MARSDEN AFC  1  v  1  OVENDEN WR

Marsden continued their good run with a point against unbeaten title challengers Ovenden, however The Cuckoo’s were left disappointed at the end of the game as they felt they had done more than enough to secure all 3 points and the visitors were lucky to keep their record in tact.

To say that the home side started quickly would be a massive understatement as they were almost 1-0 up inside 6 seconds after a well rehearsed centre almost paid dividends for the recalled Dean Siddiq who nipped in but saw his well struck shot blocked by the chest of the Ovenden keeper.

Marsden then struggled to find their feet and struggled to put any meaningful attacks together in the opening 15 minutes whilst the visitors were happy to sit back and then punt the long ball forward to the 2 attackers. Marsden then began to settle and really turn the screw and piled on the pressure but a culmination of a lack of conviction in front of goal and some good work from the defence and goalkeeper prevented the home side from taking the lead. As Marsden’s frustration grew the visitors rare attacks were becoming increasingly dangerous and it took a top drawer save from Ashley Connor to keep the score line level as he somehow managed to tip the ball over the bar when the shot looked destined for the top corner!

Whilst Marsden continued to constantly attack the away side were happy to try and hit The Cuckoo’s on the counter and they finally got their reward just before the break when, surprise, surprise a long ball over the top was met by the Ovenden attacker whose heavy touch allowed Shane Kelly enough time to get back, as the attacker tried to make space to hit his shot Kelly made a crunching tackle sending the ball out wide, however the referee adjudged that Kelly had played the man first then the ball and awarded a penalty, the penalty was superbly tucked away in the bottom corner past Connor who almost got fingertips to the shot but the sheer pace of it made it impossible to stop.

After the half time chat, Marsden looked every bit the divisions form side when they completely dominated Ovenden for the next 45 minutes!

The home side should have been level when a great move down the right starting with Adam Riders pass to Paul Storer allowed the Central midfielder time to release Dean Siddiq down the right who cut the ball back inside to Carl Sykes who after struggling for what seemed an age to get the ball out of his feet had his shot blocked by the defender, the ball fell kindly for Matt Poulain, back having been missing for 10 weeks after having ankle surgery, but his tame shot sailed over the bar.

Marsden were now piling on the pressure and eventually got their reward 20 minutes from time when another great move down the right involving many off the same players resulted in Storer getting his 4th goal of the season.

A long kick from Connor was flicked on into the path of Siddiq from the head of Dave Conway, Siddiq then beat 2 men on his way to the by-line then pulled the ball back to the on-running Sykes whose clever dummy sold his marker and allowed Storer enough time to pick his spot as he nestled the ball into the bottom corner with his left peg from 16 yards!

The visitors almost hit back straight away with Marsden confirming the old adage that teams are most vulnerable when they have just scored, as a miscalculation in the Marsden defence allowed the striker to go 1-on-1 with Connor, his initial shot was tipped onto the inside of the post and just when it looked as though the striker was about to get to the ball and prod home into the empty net from 3 yards Sean Gant made an heroic clearance throwing himself toward the ball and sending it out for a throw in!

The game then really petered out into a cagey sort of affair with the visitors not committing anything for a winner and seemingly content to survive this encounter with just a draw as the home side continued to press but with Ovenden’s 11 men behind the ball found it hard to break through to create a golden opportunity and had to resort to shots in and around 20-30 yards from goal.

The away keeper did however make a great save from Poulain late on with a volley from 20 yards!

As mentioned earlier, all in all The Cuckoo’s were disappointed with not getting all 3 points but a good game of football and another confident performance from Gavin Connor’s side against a very well organised Ovenden side.

Marsden AFC would also like to thank Ovenden’s player and Supporters for their support in the club house after the game with every player having a go on the domino card and several drinks a piece (Wakefield City Take Note), A good bunch of lads and we all wish them luck with completing the unenviable task of overhauling Bay Athletic as the top team the county, except in our reverse fixture of course!

that report is wrong,
storer started and finsihed the move for his goal and he struck it with his right foot (i think)
plus the moment where he missed from only 3 yards was before we scored (i think)
Chaddy

o yea it was a pen shane! everybody thought it was a pen apart from a few, you should have stayed on your feet.
hahahahahhaa
craig123

Cant believe your doubting Shane and his unbiased match report Chaddy.Look forward to reading them, cos 1 day the opposition might actually have been the better team and maybe, just maybe have deserved to win. Cant see it tho !
mickyled

more chance of the ref getting a decent mention
Cuckoo King

Other than the pen, the ref had a blinder in all honesty, it was nice to see a ref who knew what the offside rule was too!

Chaddy you are wrong my little 'rub-a-dub-dub' friend, the 'miss' from 3 yards was after the goal, Storer didnt start the move he just said that after to try and make it look better, In all honesty it was my header that started the move from the keepers kick, their players were complaining that I fouled their lad.

If you are gonna try and make yourself look good in front of your forum friends at least be factually correct otherwise you can stay at home on a sat night sulking and picking the splinters out of your arse whilst the rest of us go out and have a good time!
